AHF: According to WHO, monkeypox is a pandemic.

Los Angeles, California—(BUSINESS WIRE)— The World Health Organization is urged by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) to quickly declare the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international significance in light of the more than 7,600 cases that have been reported in 58 nations worldwide (PHEIC).

The monkeypox, a disease that is endemic to several nations in Africa, has expanded rapidly, a phenomenon that we do not yet completely comprehend. The WHO cannot continue to sit on their hands. There should be worry over this and a worldwide health emergency declared.

Before WHO belatedly designated COVID-19 a PHEIC and then a pandemic, it was allowed to spread for months, wasting valuable time that would have allowed governments to effectively prepare and respond. Monkeypox has been endemic in nine West and Central African nations since the beginning of 2022, with approximately 1,600 suspected or confirmed cases and 72 fatalities.

The monkeypox, a disease that is endemic to several nations in Africa, has expanded rapidly, a phenomenon that we do not yet completely comprehend. The WHO cannot continue to sit on their hands. It is important to take note of this and declare a global health emergency, according to Dr. Penninah Iutung, the bureau chief for AHF Africa. We don't see enough of that when the alarm goes out, therefore global health institutions must move quickly to alert the public, offer advise on prevention, and direct doctors and other healthcare professionals. It is also terrible that endemic diseases in developing nations only draw attention from abroad when they spread and harm large populations there.

A PHEIC declaration for monkeypox would increase the need for prompt production and widespread distribution of adequate vaccinations and diagnostic tools. JYNNEOS, a smallpox vaccine, has previously received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in treating monkeypox. Health Policy Watch reports that the identical medication, Imvanex, which is marketed under a different brand, is under consideration by the European Medicines Agency.

The WHO failed to designate the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern at its meeting on June 25, prompting AHF to publish an earlier statement urging the organisation to do so.
